Gun drilling

Gun drilling was originally developed to drill out gun barrels and is used commonly for drilling smaller diameter deep holes. It is difficult to drill a deep hole that is both straight and accurately sized with a standard twist drill. This is a problem in many manufacturing and repair processes. The bits use a rotary motion similar to a twist drill however; the bits are designed with bearing pads that slide along the surface of the hole keeping the drill bit on center.

Gun drilling is usually done at high speeds and low feed rates. There are two basic types of gun drills: the internal chip removal type and the external chip removal type. The internal type is basically a tube with a cutting bit on the front. Coolant is forced around the outside of the tube, and pours around the front of the drill forcing the chips into the center of the tube, and out of the hole.

The external chip removal type operates similarly except there is a notch cut in the outside of the drill, through which the chips exit, and a passage for the coolant goes through the center of the bar. The drill bit, however, is highly susceptible to breakage during drilling operations. During the repair process it can be necessary to re-instate existing wire ways or fluid lines. In this case NTS Middle East utilize gun drilling to get the product back to print. We have a range of gun drill sizes which allows us to machine these features to the client’s specification.

Shot peening

NTS-ME uses a closed cycle shot peening unit which means the shot can be filtered and recycled. When combined with various nozzles and heads we can successfully provide clients with a wide range of applications. Further, to aid with environmental considerations, the unit is housed inside a container that minimizes waste and discharge to surrounding areas. We can provide Almen strips to match requirements.

Shot peening is a process used to produce a compressive residual stress layer and modify mechanical properties of metals. It entails impacting a surface with shot (round metallic, glass or ceramic particles) with force sufficient to create plastic deformation. Each particle functions as a ball-peen hammer. Peening a surface spreads it plastically, causing changes in the mechanical properties of the surface. Depending on the part geometry, part material, shot material, shot quality, shot intensity, shot coverage, shot peening can increase fatigue life from 0–1000%. Plastic deformation induces a residual compressive stress in a peened surface, along with tensile stress in the interior. Surface compressive stresses confer resistance to metal fatigue and to some forms of stress corrosion. The tensile stresses deep in the part are not as problematic as tensile stresses on the surface because cracks are less likely to start in the interior.

Bead Blasting

Bead blasting is the process of removing surface deposits by applying fine beads at a low pressure without damaging the surface. It is used in a wide range of industries and many different applications. NTS-ME uses a semi-portable unit and will typically use the bead blasting process on tool threads. This process creates a “roughened” finish which is critical in mitigating “thread-lock” on non-ferrous metal joints and minimizes the chance of galling and damaging threads during make-up and break-out. Equipment can be fixed units, semi-portable or fully portable. As part of the decontamination process or to assist in the reduction of thread galling, bead blasting capability is available at NTS Middle East.

Welding

A key part of the rework of products is the need to machine any pitted or cracked area and then weld with the appropriate filler material. There is a range of welding processes used by NTS Middle East to make sure that the final reworked product is a reliable and quality repair. All stubbing processes utilize a rotating mechanism to ensure that we have a uniform weld and a consistent final product.

MWD/LWD product rework:

Since 1995 NTS have been working closely with key customers to develop and refine rework procedures. Our prime focus has been implementing repair processes for non mag materials used in the MWD/LWD business. Due to the diversity of drilling environments throughout the world this has necessitated the need for various solutions depending on the location.

Upgrade of drilling tools:

NTS ME has been involved in the mechanical upgrade of products used in the MWD/LWD business for a number of years. Specific areas where we have assisted the client in product enhancements are:

  • Upgrade to density and porosity tools.
  • Change to antenna design on resistivity tools.
  • Improvement to connection on modular subs.

Remanufacture of products:

A key part of the service that NTS Middle East provides relates to the reworking of products to bring it back into client’s specification. This may require intensive welding and machining operations to be conducted. Every product has a dedicated job number that allows for all technical and commercial requirements to be captured.

Stubbing of non-mag assets:

Since 2007 NTS Middle East have been actively involved in the stubbing of non mag assets and inventory for various clients. A large quantity of products are reworked each quarter. Each stubbed part has a complete set of documentation that allows for easy traceability plus welding quality.

Phosphating

As a One-Stop-Shop, since 2013 NTS ME has started providing Phosphate coatings on steel parts. This coating is often used for corrosion resistance, prevent galling or lubricity. It is a Stainless Steel tank with built-in heater & having digital control panel with insulation & removable lid.
